Following the Gold Rush to Colorado

Today was spent sight seeing, again.  We love being tourists. We started our day at the Public Transportation Station to ride the ski gondola to Peak 8 on the slopes. There is so much to do there that we are going to return tomorrow to  Breckenridge' s Fun Park.  Among other attractions, we plan to experience the Gold Runner Coaster, the Alpine Super Slide, the Chair Lifts, Mini Golf, Mountain Bike Riding, and Mineshaft Maze.  It will be a full day.

Here are some pictures from the gondola we took to the top.  Keep in mind the pictures aren't clear as the glass is full of scratches and smudges.

The gondolas are free to ride  during the summer, so we went to The Fun Park to see the sights.

Our view from the gondola.

We were looking for moose from the gondola, but did not see any this morning.

The temperature this morning was about 55 degrees.
With the sunny skies at this altitude, it seemed very warm.
The 50's and 60's are perfect weather here.

The Alpine Super Slide.

When we returned to the base of the mountain, we left for The Country Boy Mine tour.
We were going to try to strike it rich in Colorado,

The Country Boy Mine, founded in 1887, is one of the oldest and most famous mines in Summit County, Colorado. Early in its over 100 year history, the Country Boy Mine was known for its gold and silver production and later earned national fame by producing large quantities of high grade lead and zinc for use in World War I and World War II.

After looking around, we put on our hard hats and rain coats and headed into the mine.
We went 1,000 feet into the mine.  We explored the original workings of the mines as we felt, heard, and smelled some of what it was like to be a Colorado miner over 100 years ago.

This candle light is the light the miners had to travel in and out of the mines.

We made our way back out to daylight and had the opportunity to "Strike It Rich" by panning for gold!
Water still runs through this mine, so you can get some flecks of gold from this stream if you are patient enough to sift through the rocks and mud.

After a busy morning of panning for gold, we returned to Breckenridge for lunch at La Francaise.  Yes, for lunch we indulged on authentic delicacies baked on the premises.  It was our escape to France!
